In short, I have fun with my collages and I hope viewers have fun looking at them.” Pelham currently lives in Monroe, Georgia where she teaches painting and works in her studio. McIntosh spent time in the lab, looking at slides under a microscope, but the images that resulted aren't exactly true to life. A couple with their feet on the edge of some shallow water hold hands, visible only from the knees down and in their distorted reflection in the water. At their feet sit two paper boats, folded out of the maps that Whittle used so often in his earlier work, sitting on top of their reflected heads, almost like hats. Whittle says he’s “drawn to the synthetic version of a place,” with maps not being real places but representations of them. The idea of “embarking” (pun definitely intended) on a new journey with a new partner is strongly present, as the two boats are carried along the same stream, and the Queen Anne’s lace wildflowers in the background traditionally symbolize sanctuary. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eJeffery Whittle received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Georgia and his Masters of Fine Arts in painting from Cornell University. His unique work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and resulted in grants, residencies, and awards. Oxford American magazine recently named him one of its 100 under 100, “The New Superstars of Southern Art” and in 2018, he was the Kirk Visiting Artist at Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia. The artist admits to René Magritte as a strong influence, and although Keiger's surrealism feels gentler and more cheerful, there are similarities: the clouds, the preoccupation with doubling, the people moved around like paper dolls.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe image feels equal parts winking and sincere, a combination of new and old country, as Keiger says, quite likely influenced by the TV show \"Hee Haw.\" Not only is it visually symmetrical, but it's balanced in terms of the opposites it presents: indoors and outdoors, animals and humans, male and female, East and West, desert and river. He says, \"I start each painting with a line down the center and everything plays off that line. I've never really thought about it, it's more of an intuitive choice. I can treat the subjects as abstract forms that guide the viewer around starting with the center.\"\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eKeiger was born in North Carolina and attended the University of South Carolina for his undergraduate degree in art. He got his MFA at the University of Georgia in 1982, where he studied with Jim Herbert and Judith McWillie, and one might spy Sanford Stadium's famous hedges bordering the stage in this picture. He says he started off as a completely abstract artist, but by the time he hit his 30s, he also hit a wall and started doodling circus-inspired watercolors on the side. Those whimsical works led to what he's been doing for the past 30 years. Originally from Cairo, Georgia, Pelham attended Florida State University for a fine arts degree in the early 1960s, where she was inspired and intrigued by the work of the magic realist painters of the late 1940s. Talented artists like Paul Cadmus, George Tooker and Ivan Albright created finely observed and rendered scenes in which reality was askew. More down to earth than surrealism, magic realism was less another world than a world seen through a distorting lens, often driven by narrative as much as imagery. Pelham's experience studying art history at Sotheby's gave her a bigger deck of cards from which to work, and she says that Hieronymus Bosch's elaborate scenes seem to her the foundation of surrealism.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003ePelham says that, although she took collage classes at FSU, the medium didn't grab her interest until about 10 years ago. While painting a portrait of her young grandson, she added a cut-paper environment behind and around him, relishing the opportunity to add story through those flourishes. Now, friends bring her old magazines and ones that feature lots of color on high-quality paper. She likes to work in art history jokes, like Grant Wood's trees and Magritte's trains, but \"The Fox Went Out on a Chilly Night\" doesn't have any of those secrets. Instead, it takes as its inspiration the traditional folk song about a sneaky fellow out on the town looking for some fat poultry to feed his little ones. Pelham doesn't picture the entire story, but she suggests much, including the rollicking tempo of the song through the fox's pose.
